English Translation

Come, sit for a moment. The sunlight is very tender, On the green grass Lie down And observe this How vast are The clouds in the sky And how small is This green leaf This tiny blade of grass On which you are lying.

Experience with a calm mind Life's pulsation in every particle, This coolness mingled in the air May make you forget every worldly bond. Lose yourself in this vastness, Where time holds no meaning. This moment alone is true, This is the eternal song of life. Shrinking into nature's lap, You will find rest within, Free yourself and ponder, What is there to gain, what is the purpose?

Literary & Historical Context

(A Moment on the Green Grass) is a celebrated poem by Sachchidananda Hirananda Vatsyayan 'Agyeya', a towering figure of Hindi literature and a pioneer of the 'Nayi Kavita' (New Poetry) movement and 'Prayogvad' (Experimentalism). Written in his characteristic style, the poem is a profound reflection on the human connection with nature and the fleeting yet significant nature of time. Agyeya urges the reader to pause, to observe the simple beauty of the natural world—the tender sunlight, the vast sky, the tiny blade of grass—and through this observation, to gain a perspective on their own existence. It juxtaposes the immensity of the cosmos with the smallness of an individual moment, inviting an introspective experience. The poem embodies Agyeya's philosophical depth and his ability to find universal truths in mundane observations, making it a timeless piece that encourages mindfulness and appreciation for the present. It stands as a testament to his unique contribution in steering Hindi poetry towards modernism and existential contemplation.
