Composed by महादेवी वर्मा (Mahadevi Verma)

English Translation

What worship, what adoration now! For that boundless one, my life's minutest temple's vow! My breaths, unceasingly, my beloved's praise avow! With the dust of their feet, cleansed by countless tears, somehow! To offer as oblation, my everything, I now bestow! Unique ablutions performed by tearful springs that flow! All instruments of worship, every pore with joy does glow! What worship, what adoration now!

AI Echo (English)

No lamp, no ritual, just inner light's bright flare! In every pulse, my beloved's tune, in every moment, their care! In devotion's deep current, my whole heart drifts there! In every atom of creation, I see your lovely fair! I've left the world's illusion, only your priest I am, I swear! With love's nectar I've nourished this unique feeling I bear! What worldly grandeur, what charity, when you're life's very stream, my prayer! What worship, what adoration now!

Literary & Historical Context

“क्या पूजा, क्या अर्चन रे!” by Mahadevi Verma is a quintessential Chhayavaadi (Romantic-Mystic) poem, reflecting her profound spiritual leanings and lyrical style. As one of the four pillars of Chhayavaad, Verma is celebrated for her exploration of an intensely personal and often melancholic devotion towards an undefined divine beloved, referred to as the 'Aseem' (boundless) or 'Aprichit Priya' (unknown beloved). The poem rejects external rituals and traditional forms of worship in favor of an internal, all-encompassing spiritual experience. The poet transforms her entire being—her breath, tears, and even her pain—into acts of devotion. Her 'minutest life' becomes the temple, her breath the unending praise, her tears the unique ablution, and every pore of her body rejoices in this sacred offering. This beautifully illustrates the Chhayavaadi emphasis on subjective experience, a romanticized connection with nature and the divine, and a deep emotional yearning that transcends conventional religious practices. Verma's use of rich imagery and tender emotional expression makes this poem a poignant portrayal of spiritual surrender and universal love, central to her work and a significant contribution to Hindi literature.
