Composed by महादेवी वर्मा (Mahadevi Verma)

English Translation

I am a cloud laden with sorrow! No corner of the vast sky Was ever truly mine, My identity, my history thus: Yesterday swelled, today it's gone. I am a cloud laden with sorrow! In throbs, a new sprout is nurtured, In it, tender shoots unfold; Eyes wet with smiles, eyelids too; Flowing ceaselessly like a waterfall, I am a cloud laden with sorrow!

AI Echo (Hindi)

Whether storm winds blow or pure breeze flows, No age can halt my destined goes. This tale of a fleeting life I tell, In every drop, an old mark dwells. I satiate the earth with my rain, Then merge into the void, to die again. This cycle forever shall pertain, This cloud of sorrow will thus remain.

Literary & Historical Context

(I am a cloud laden with sorrow) is one of the most iconic poems by Mahadevi Verma, a leading figure of the Chhayavaad (Romanticism) movement in Hindi literature. Written in the early 20th century, the poem beautifully encapsulates the essence of existential sorrow, transience, and a deep, almost spiritual connection with nature. Mahadevi Verma, often called 'Modern Meera', personifies herself as a rain cloud – a symbol of transient existence, self-sacrifice (giving rain), and inherent melancholy. The cloud has no permanent abode in the vast sky, signifying the poet's sense of detachment and the fleeting nature of life. Yet, this sorrow is not purely negative; it's a creative force, nurturing new life (like rain nurturing sprouts) even as the cloud itself dissipates. The poem explores themes of identity, impermanence, and the profound beauty found within suffering, making it a timeless piece of lyrical introspection in Hindi poetry.
