(Arun Yeh Madhumay Desh Hamara)

Composed by जयशंकर प्रसाद (Jaishankar Prasad)

English Translation

This crimson, sweet land is ours. Where, reaching, unknown horizons find a haven. On the lovely lotus's heart-like glow, charming tree-tops dance. The auspicious vermilion of life is scattered over all the greenery. With tiny rainbow-like wings spread, aided by the cool Malayan breeze, Birds fly towards it, recognizing it as their beloved nest. Clouds from tearful eyes form, filled with compassionate water here. Waves of infinity crash, finding their shore in this place. Bearing a golden pitcher, dawn in the morning fills and pours out my joys, While temples slumber, and stars awaken after a night.

Yes, this land is ours, where the heart finds peace. On every path of life, lamps of hope are lit. When the sun's rays touch, every particle of earth, Every morning a new message, every evening sacred. For centuries here, the stream of love has flowed, The desire of every bird, the truth of every wave. This is sacred land, where dreams are nurtured, Here every stranger finds new moments of joy. The glorious saga of history, absorbed in the leaves, This is my country, this is my beloved Mother India.

Literary & Historical Context

"अरुण यह मधुमय देश हमारा" is a highly acclaimed song from Jaishankar Prasad's historical play 'Chandragupta' (1931). Sung by the Greek character Cornelia, daughter of Seleucus Nicator, it expresses her admiration and love for India's beauty, welcoming nature, and spiritual depth. The poem epitomizes the 'Chhayavaad' (Romanticism) era in Hindi literature, characterized by its lyrical beauty, rich imagery, and profound emotionality, often intertwined with patriotic sentiments and a deep connection to nature. Prasad, a pioneer of Chhayavaad, uses vivid metaphors like "crimson, sweet land" and "golden urn of dawn" to paint an idyllic picture of India, portraying it as a haven for all, where nature is vibrant, compassion flows, and even foreign souls find solace. It reflects a universal longing for a land of peace and beauty, while subtly invoking a sense of national pride and cultural richness. Its inclusion in 'Chandragupta' also lends it a historical resonance, linking ancient India's welcoming spirit with contemporary nationalist aspirations.
