(Main Neer Bhari Dukh Ki Badli)

Composed by महादेवी वर्मा (Mahadevi Verma)

English Translation

I am a cloud laden with sorrow! No corner of the vast sky Ever truly belongs to me, My identity is simply this, my history: I gathered yesterday, I vanish today! Laughing, blooming flowers wither, Every evening of life declines. Eyes tire from endlessly watching paths, Sleepless nights also burn away.

AI Echo (Hindi)

AI Echo (English)

This eternal stream of pain, Flows ceaselessly like a waterfall. Crashing against the banks of a dry heart, It extinguishes every ray of hope. Life is merely a traveler, Who walks day and night on the path. Running after a mirage, Never finding their destination. Only one waiting in the eyes, Lost in the infinite void.

Literary & Historical Context

“Main Neer Bhari Dukh Ki Badli” (I am a Cloud Laden with Sorrow) is one of Mahadevi Verma's most iconic poems, embodying the essence of the Chhayavaad (Romanticism/Shadowism) movement in Hindi literature. Verma, known as 'Modern Meera', masterfully uses natural imagery—here, a rain-laden cloud—as a metaphor for the self, fraught with a profound, almost cosmic sorrow. The cloud's transient existence mirrors the human condition: its origin, its journey, and its eventual dissolution, all imbued with a sense of detachment and universal suffering. The poem explores themes of impermanence, loneliness, and the poignant beauty of selfless giving (the cloud shedding its tears as rain). It reflects the introspection and melancholic idealism characteristic of Chhayavaad, where personal emotion is often elevated to a philosophical plane, reflecting a spiritual yearning or a profound understanding of existence. Its lyrical quality and deep emotional resonance have secured its place as a timeless classic in Hindi poetry.
