(Janatantra ka Janm)

(Ramdhari Singh 'Dinkar')

English Translation

The cold ashes of centuries have begun to smolder, The earth, wearing a golden crown, struts proudly; Clear the way, listen to the rumbling sound of time's chariot, Vacate the throne, for the people are coming. The people? Yes, those same innocent figures of clay, Who always endure the biting cold and frost, Even when snakes seem to be sucking every limb, Still never opening their mouths to voice their pain. The people? Yes, that very oath of the long, wide tongue, The people? Yes, they truly endure great suffering. So be it, but finally, what is this democracy for them? Not ten million heads of one man, but simply ten million heads. Vacate the throne, for the people are coming.

Now the conch of justice has sounded, In every courtyard, a new dawn has risen. No soul will remain silent now, The sound of revolution has flowed from every throat. A torch has lit up in every hand, The fortresses of darkness are about to crumble. Awaken! For this new age has come, Ready to hear the roar of rights. The rule of the people will now ascend, No king nor subject will there be. The banner of equality will wave, Where every soul will be free.

Literary & Historical Context

(Birth of Democracy) by Ramdhari Singh 'Dinkar' is a seminal work in modern Hindi poetry, reflecting the post-independence aspirations and challenges of a newly democratic India. Penned in the mid-20th century, Dinkar, a 'Rashtrakavi' (National Poet), passionately articulates the power of the common people and their inherent right to govern. The poem, often cited for its revolutionary fervor, calls for the established order to make way for the burgeoning voice of the masses. It metaphorically describes the awakening of the long-suffering populace as cold ashes turning into smoldering embers, ready to claim their rightful place. Dinkar emphasizes that true democracy lies not in the rule of a few, but in the collective will and voice of every individual citizen, challenging the traditional hierarchy and celebrating the advent of a people-centric governance. Its powerful imagery and direct address make it a timeless anthem for democratic ideals.
