Composed by माखनलाल चतुर्वेदी

English Translation

I do not wish to be woven into a celestial maiden's garland, Nor do I wish to entice a beloved by being strung in a lover's wreath. I do not wish, O Lord, to be cast upon the corpses of emperors, Nor do I wish to adorn the heads of deities and boast of my fortune. O gardener, pluck me! And throw me upon that path, The path where many brave souls go to offer their heads for the motherland.

Not just a flower, it tells an immortal tale of sacrifice, In every particle, the sacred music of patriotism flows. To the gardener's staff, we too shall bow today, For the flower fallen on the soil, illuminates the heroes' path. This is inspiration, this is life, a call to die for one's land, Even as dust, it bestows new honor upon the motherland.

Literary & Historical Context

(Pushp Ki Abhilasha), or "The Flower's Wish," is one of the most iconic and beloved patriotic poems in Hindi literature, penned by the revered poet Makhanlal Chaturvedi (1889-1968). Chaturvedi was a prominent figure during India's freedom struggle, and his works often echoed the fervent nationalistic sentiments of the era. He was a poet, writer, journalist, and a freedom fighter, known for his unique blend of Chhayavaadi (Romantic) and nationalist poetry. This particular poem personifies a flower, expressing its profound desire not to adorn beauty or power, but to be sacrificed on the path where brave soldiers march to lay down their lives for their motherland. It powerfully conveys the spirit of selfless sacrifice and dedication to the nation, becoming an anthem for patriotism. The poem's simple yet deeply moving language and profound message resonated deeply with the masses, inspiring countless individuals during the independence movement and remaining a timeless symbol of national pride. Its significance lies in its ability to instill a sense of duty and love for the country through the humble voice of a flower.
